Museums in Istanbul

Istanbul's museums fall into three clusters, and choosing one cluster per day saves a lot of time lost in traffic.

The historic peninsula

The old city, around Sultanahmet and Gülhane, has the densest group of museums within walking distance of each other. Topkapı Palace easily takes half a day. From its outer courtyard a path leads down to the Istanbul Archaeology Museums, and the Basilica Cistern and the Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum on the old Hippodrome (At Meydanı) are a few streets away. The tram runs straight through the peninsula with stops at Sultanahmet and Gülhane; after that you walk.

Further up towards the land walls, the Chora Church (Kariye) and the Pammakaristos Church (Fethiye) need a separate half day. They pair well with a walk through Balat and Fener. Note that "camii" means mosque: both are Byzantine churches that later became mosques, so dress modestly and expect to cover your head if you are a woman.

If you are starting here, the one day in Sultanahmet route gives you a sensible order.

Beyoğlu, Galata and the Bosphorus

Across the Golden Horn the focus shifts to art and city life. Walk uphill from Galata Tower to Tepebaşı and you reach the Pera Museum. The Museum of Innocence in Çukurcuma and Istanbul Modern on the Karaköy waterfront fit into the same walk. Further along the Golden Horn, in Hasköy, the Rahmi M. Palaces and fortresses line the Bosphorus: the Istanbul Naval Museum in Beşiktaş, Rumeli Hisarı and the Sakıp Sabancı Museum further north, and Beylerbeyi Palace on the Asian shore. The coast road is slow, so use the public ferries (vapur) to cross between Europe and Asia.

For a longer stay, the three days in Istanbul route gives the peninsula, Beyoğlu and the Bosphorus a day each. Queues at the big sites are shortest early in the morning. Opening days vary, so check each museum page. The state museum card, Müzekart, is meant for Turkish citizens and residents; visitors from abroad should look at the museum passes listed on the official site, muze.gov.tr.
