Istanbul in Three Days: Twelve Museums

This route treats Istanbul as three different cities: the historic peninsula that was the centre of both Byzantium and the Ottoman Empire, the nineteenth-century Bosphorus shore and Beyoğlu, and the land walls and Golden Horn, which far fewer visitors reach. Each day stays in one area and crosses the water at most once.

An Istanbulkart, the city's rechargeable transport card, works on the tram, the funicular and the ferries, and saves a lot of fumbling at turnstiles.

Day 1: the historic peninsula

Take the tram to Sultanahmet and begin with Topkapı Palace. The courtyards are calmer in the morning, and the Treasury, the Holy Relics and the Harem can easily take three hours. On the lane leading down to Gülhane Park are the Istanbul Archaeology Museums, three buildings in one garden; do not leave without seeing the Alexander Sarcophagus and the Tiled Kiosk. In the afternoon go underground at the Basilica Cistern opposite Hagia Sophia, then spend time with the carpets at the Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum on the Hippodrome. All of this is on foot. Day 2: the Bosphorus shore and Beyoğlu

Ride the tram to its Kabataş terminus and walk along the shore to Dolmabahçe Palace. Built in the nineteenth century, it is nothing like Topkapı: European-style halls, crystal chandeliers and a long façade on the water. The state rooms and the Harem take two to three hours. Continue along the shore to Beşiktaş, where the Istanbul Naval Museum beside the ferry pier displays the sultans' ceremonial rowing boats (caiques) among much else. An hour and a half is enough.

After lunch, go back to Kabataş and take the tram to Tophane. See Turkish modern art at Istanbul Modern on the waterfront, then climb to Beyoğlu on foot or by the Tünel funicular and end the day at the Pera Museum. Day 3: the land walls and the Golden Horn

Take the tram to the Topkapı stop. Confusingly, this Topkapı is a gate in the city walls, not the palace. The Panorama 1453 History Museum tells the story of the Ottoman conquest through a 360-degree painting under a dome. An hour is enough.

From here, walk north along the walls to Edirnekapı or take a short taxi ride. Kariye Mosque, the former Chora Church, is known for its fourteenth-century Byzantine mosaics and frescoes. It has been a mosque again since 2024, so visits pause at prayer times and the usual mosque dress code applies. Allow an hour. A few minutes away, the Tekfur Palace is a late Byzantine palace building; its museum covers the Ottoman tile workshops found there by excavation.

Finish across the Golden Horn at the Rahmi M. Koç Museum in Hasköy. A taxi from Tekfur Palace takes little time; Golden Horn ferries also run, but departures can be infrequent. With cars, locomotives, a submarine and aircraft, two hours in this industrial museum go quickly.
